Honolulu is the best city for an active lifestyle, according to a report from WalletHub. Following Honolulu are traditionally large cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco. The worst cities for an active lifestyle are spread across the country, with North Las Vegas, Nevada scoring the lowest. Other cities on the negative end of the spectrum include Fresno, California, Corpus Christi, Texas and Fort Wayne, Indiana.

To determine where Americans have the best chance of remaining active, WalletHub compared the 100 biggest U.S. cities across 35 key metrics. The data set ranges from the average monthly fitness club fee to the city’s bike score to the share of physically inactive adults.

Some insights from the report include Orlando, Florida, having the most sporting goods stores per capita, 11.9 times more than in North Las Vegas, Nevada, which has the fewest. Gilbert, Arizona, has the most public golf courses per capita, 39.4 times more than Laredo, Texas, which has the fewest.

Madison, Wisconsin, has the most fitness trainers and aerobics instructors per capita, 3.9 times more than Corpus Christi, Texas, which has the fewest. New York has the most playgrounds per capita, 13 times more than in Hialeah, Florida, which has the fewest.

“It can be difficult to get motivated to stay fit, especially when people are busy with work, but living in a city that promotes physical activity can make things a lot easier," said Cassandra Happe, WalletHub Analyst. "The best cities are easy to traverse by walking or biking, have a lot of athletic fields that are open to the public, and are in close proximity to natural hiking trails and swimming areas.”

Spas that are located in these fitness-loving cities would benefit from bringing fun fitness classes on board to appeal to their guests.
