To say that this trailblazer changed the path of wellness forever would be an understatement. Belgin Aksoy, founder of the renowned Global Wellness Day (GWD), created the annual celebration that we all know and love. Now, with the 12th installment of the yearly event so recently behind us, the industry pioneer sat down with WellSpa 360 to discuss her favorite wellness treatment, the budding yet important trend of kids wellness, and the future of GWD.
How did Global Wellness Day (GWD) come about?
In 2004, I had serious health problems. I made radical changes in my life and learned that the balance of health and happiness is indispensable. After seeing the positive effects in my life, I had to do something. I set out to create Global Wellness Day and spread its influence throughout the world. Living well is a necessity for every human being; wellness is not a luxury but an inherent right. My goal with GWD was to create a day that would empower individuals and communities to prioritize their well-being and embrace positive lifestyle choices.
What wellness trends do you find most exciting?
I find greater value in focusing on daily actions, but if there were to be one trend worth embracing, it would undoubtedly be kids wellness. Ensuring the well-being of our younger generation is a paramount goal, and by instilling healthy habits and knowledge in them, we pave the way for a brighter and healthier future.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
Working day and night to spread wellness, and seeing GWD embraced by so many people around the world in such a short time is my all-time greatest accomplishment. There have been so many moments that truly make me proud and grateful: Seeing the GWD flag reach the top of Mt. Everest; having aid missions organized for disadvantaged communities; receiving support from presidents, schools, hospitals and Hollywood stars; and finally having an extraordinary GWD family of 140 extraordinary volunteers—all while touching the hearts of millions.

What’s on your bucket list?
One of my top aspirations is to explore the breathtaking continent of Africa. From its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage to its unique wildlife and vibrant cities, there is so much to discover and experience. I yearn to embark on unforgettable safaris, witness the awe-inspiring wildlife in its natural habitats, and immerse myself in the local traditions and customs.
What’s your favorite wellness treatment?
Foot reflexology! Unlike some other forms of therapy or relaxation techniques, foot reflexology doesn’t require a lot of time or preparation. It can be easily incorporated into my daily routine, whether I’m at home, at work or even on the go. All I need is a few minutes to dedicate to this practice, and I can instantly feel its effects. It helps release tension, improve circulation and promote a sense of balance and harmony throughout my body.
How do you practice self-care?
I love getting up early in the morning. I do 40 minutes of cardio on an empty stomach, and then 15 minutes of quiet time for self-reflection—the most precious moments of my day. I also love being in nature, where I find balance and peace. My favorite activities are hiking, walking, climbing, forest bathing and tandem paragliding.
At home, I spend most of my time with my son or reading a book. I use natural and organic products on my skin, and drink lots of water and herbal teas. I have a life in which there is definitely room for exercise and time for myself, and I don’t consider spending time for myself as a luxury. If I’m not well, then I’m of no use to anyone!
What does the future of GWD look like?
Ultimately, my goal is to help support individuals and societies to maintain better lifestyles. Most importantly, although GWD lasts for 24 hours, our message is intended to last a lifetime. The day we are accepted into the United Nations Official Calendar will be a celebration, because that is the day that GWD becomes celebrated by future generations.
