There is a reason why, for thousands of years, people have sought refuge from the worries of the world on the shores of Lake Como. From aristocrats in Ancient Rome to celebrities such as George Clooney, Como has earned its reputation for glitz and glamor. Grand Hotel Tremezzo, located in the small town of Tremezzo on Lake Como, is the Grand Dame of hotels on Lake Como’s shores. The Grand, as it is known to locals and to repeat visitors, is housed in a refined Art Nouveau palazzo surrounded by a private park landscaped in quintessential Italian style. From the moment they arrive, guests are offered chance to feel like celebrities from old Hollywood film. Its 90 rooms offer sweeping vistas of the lake and the surrounding Grigne Mountains.
The Grand’s oasis of wellness, T Spa, invites visitors to be replenished by the beauty of the natural surroundings and restored by cutting edge wellness treatments. My family and I visited T Spa this past summer, and I enjoyed The Glowing Facial, an ultra-hydrating treatment that cleanses the skin barrier and maintains its water reserve. I also enjoyed a signature massage that uses essential oils from T Spa’s Santa Maria Novella essential oil line. I then received a mani-pedi at the in-house hair and aesthetic studio.

Before and after my treatments, I enjoyed a cup of tea in the spa’s relaxion room with balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake. T Spa also contains a number of luxury amenities, such as an infinity pool, Turkish bath, sauna, Mediterranean steam room and a Hammam suite. Guests can even participate in yoga classes, either in the studio overlooking Lake Como or on the shores of the lake itself on their floating pool—the only of its kind on Lake Como.
Just last year, Grand Hotel Tremezzo unveiled a brand-new virtual boutique of Italian wares called Sense of Lake. This line offers an exclusive edit of luxury accessories, designer clothing and homeware that showcases the very best of Italian craftsmanship and tradition. The meticulously curated line allows guests to bring home a bit of the leisure and luxury of The Grand, and incorporate it into their everyday routines. Offerings include locally crafted Como silk scarves, luxurious swimwear, beautiful kaftans, Murano-style glassware, personalized luggage, the property’s signature scent Aqua Como, available in perfume, room diffusers, candle and bath products, and more.

This June 2022, Grand Hotel Tremezzo is opening a second property on Lake Como’s shores. This sister hotel, Passalacqua, is situated on land once owned by owned by Pope Innocent XI, will offer 24 boutique suites, an open-air gym amid an olive grove, and outdoor spa treatments on Lake Como’s shores.
There is no better way to enjoy the unparalleled beauty of Lake Como than by being on the lake itself. My family and I finished our visit to The Grand with a boat ride on one of their classic, vintage, wooden Italian boats. Truly, a visit to Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an unmitigated and charming immersion into la dolce vita of Lake Como, which is sure to delight Italophiles everywhere.
