How did you get your start in the industry?
I have always had a deep interest in wellness, not only personally but in the broader sense of those around me. I considered pursuing a career in medicine but found the clinical approach to health was not as appealing to me as developing meaningful connections with people. This led me to massage school where I found my avocation and passion. I went on to study aesthetics, yoga instruction and group fitness to broaden my experience and skill as a wellness practitioner.
What are your top self-care practices?
I prioritize self-care as a core pillar of my life, and I try to find ways to weave it into my everyday routine. A perfect day for me is a morning boot camp followed by an invigorating nature hike. After a light, nutritious meal, I would read or play with my grandkids. Then, for some restorative me-time, I love a great mask while soaking in the tub.
What’s the best part of the wellness industry?
The pursuit of wellness is an ever-evolving and rapidly growing field with the purpose of improving quality of life. There hasn’t been a day of my practice where I did not learn something new, whether by following industry news, engaging with fellow professionals or working closely with clients. When I share my knowledge and experience, I feel a direct connection to the future promise of our profession.
What is your favorite healthy recipe?
Pan-Seared Scallops with Garlic Chive Sauce, a dish developed by the chef-nutritionists at Canyon Ranch, is tasty, quick and the perfect indulgent yet healthy meal. The delicious, punchy zest of chive melded with the savory fresh garlic accentuates the delicate flavor of plump sea scallops.
What advice do you have for newcomers to the spa industry?
First, if you love people, you have picked the right path. Trust that gut instinct for human connection and care; your clients and your managers will unfailingly appreciate your enthusiasm and commitment. Develop mentor relationships to continue your education and benefit from the wisdom of their experience. And believe you can accomplish anything you set your mind and heart on achieving.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
Raising three beautiful, kind and caring children who have grown into compassionate adults, who gave me grandkids. That’s my greatest achievement! I reap such great rewards every day when I get to spend time with each of them.
Professionally, I am proud of being the chairperson for southern Nevada’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), the 2014 and 2018 LLS All-Star Woman of the Year, and leading the effort to secure two substantial research grants for lymphocytic leukemia.
