When it comes to speaking up about diversity and inclusion in the spa industry, Toshiana Baker, founder of the Network of Multi-Cultural Spa and Wellness Professionals (NMSWP), is one of the most passionate leaders around. A dynamic speaker, bestselling author, and spa and wellness expert, Baker shares her insights about industry trends, where she hopes to see ongoing growth and more.
How did you get started in the industry?
I was unfulfilled by my job in insurance, so I went to esthetics school, got my esthetics license, and started as a rookie esthetician at the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa that used to be in Baltimore.
What wellness trends do you see emerging?
My three favorite wellness trends that are emerging are (1) the increased awareness of energy healing modalities, (2) the increased demand for body care and whole body wellness as an extension of skin care and (3) the increased understanding of spiritual self-care by younger generations.
What’s your favorite treatment to receive?
My favorite wellness treatment in the spa is a combination service that includes a body scrub, massage and facial into one session. It’s amazing.
What advice do you have for someone just getting started in the industry?
The world needs you—exactly as you are—to do this work. It is not easy, but it’s worth it. Find and stay around people who nourish your possibilities.
What do you love most about spa and wellness?
I love that we have the power to use our knowledge, skills and talents to legitimately change people’s lives and strengthen their confidence in how they show up in the world.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
Achieving what I have in my life and career is something that my ancestors only dreamed about. I have a great sense of pride and accomplishment by simply being able to embrace the fullness of who I am, and by showing up to serve in this industry with love and compassion.
What changes are you noticing in the industry?
I am loving seeing more intentional commitments to diversity. It’s more reflective of who we really are in this world. I am speaking of those who have demonstrated a sincere commitment. While I feel we have a way to go, I believe that we are making progress.
What is your favorite healthy recipe right now?
Recently, I got hooked on a Greek salad topped with grilled salmon, and I’ve eaten it so much that I am going to turn into one!
What’s something you can’t leave the house without?
Lip balm or clear lip gloss.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Butter popcorn with peanut M&Ms sprinkled throughout.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration in many little things that show up daily. The key for me is to expect something to blow my mind (in a good way) every day. Then, I stay mindful and present enough to see it and appreciate it. I have not been disappointed yet.
How do you practice self-care?
I build self-care to my daily calendar. From getting a good night’s sleep and drinking water to taking breaks and learning to enforce healthy boundaries, self-care is not something I wait to do on a certain occasion or day. I am intentional in planning pleasure, joy and care of myself daily—that’s what it means to me.
