How did you get started in the industry?
I began working in the hospitality industry in 1986 as a dining room manager at a restaurant. I fell in love with being able to serve and support others, which eventually led me to join the hotel industry where I have served and promoted an inclusive leadership style for the last 35 years.
What does it take to successfully run a spa?
I believe the most important part about running a spa is being able to create an environment where guests feel comfortable and safe as themselves. It is also just as important to create a healthy environment for colleagues, where they are able to feel their best and share their gifts with others. The spa is an intimate space where one expects trust and to be trusted, which is very important to me.
What is your favorite treatment?
My favorite spa and wellness treatment changes constantly, as it depends on what my body and mind may need the most at any given time. Currently, I am enjoying the Ginger Healer treatment, a therapeutic deep tissue massage using pure ginger rosemary oil. The use of pure botanical oil is so important to me, because I strive to feel my best from the outside in using elements of nature whenever possible.
What do you see trending in wellness and travel?
In the past year, I have seen a shift in wellness meaning both maintaining your physical health as well as your mental well-being, which is just as vital. Coming out of a very challenging and isolating time, people have decieded that their mental well-being is a top priority and are searching for spaces that will allow them to focus on and support this priority. Miraval continues to build tools and resources that are complementary to the world, and to our colleagues to help maneuver through these times.
What’s your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is being able to provide a space where people can be and create the best version of themselves.
What is your best wellness advice?
Be present for yourself, and don’t feel guilty about it. When we can have the same space to care for ourselves as we have for others, we can allow great things to flow into our lives. We don’t need to apologize for putting our well-being first.
What’s your favorite thing about the spa and wellness industry?
My favorite thing about this industry is being able to bear witness to individuals reconnecting with themselves, watching colleagues bringing their gifts to life, and watching our guests receive and benefit from them.
How can pros create strong connections with guests?
It’s truly a simple philosophy: It’s important to exercise empathy, because if you can feel what another person is feeling, you can better create a space where they can reconnect with themselves and find support.
What’s your favorite healthy recipe?
Currently, I am enjoying all kinds of dips-we have a carrot/peanut butter spread at Miraval Austin that I am loving right now. I also want to highlight that digital mindfulness is a “healthy recipe” for the mind and body; knowing when to put my phone down or where to place it at night is important.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
I try to eliminate the word “guilty” from my vocabulary because I firmly believe we should feel at peace giving ourselves something our bodies are craving without feeling shame. I mindfully indulge in a good slice of pizza! It is all about life in balance.
What’s your top tip for retaining employees?
Colleagues need avenues for well-being, too. I highly recommend creating an environment that encourages your colleagues to focus on their own wellness. Provide resources for them to be able to be their best. Celebrate and support them, and listen with the intent to understand and create a cultural of inclusivity.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
A cup of coffee in hand! I can’t leave the house without it.
